What is Evolution?

Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. Although these are alarming developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

OECs may be less well-known, but their beliefs are as passionate like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is not possible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution.” It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." In this view, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Then these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they will remove references to evolution in their textbooks. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The causes are not certain, but could be related to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.

On August 7 and 8, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
